This year there were 63 students from within Northumberland County that applied for The Clay Elliott Scholarship. The competition was fierce and after many hours of deliberation, 21 students have been chosen to be the recipient of a minimum of $1500. The total money to be awarded for this year will be $41,500. To ensure that each application is judged solely on what is presented, the process is completely blinded by having a third party black out all the names and identifiers.
One outstanding application came from Horatio Burke, a student at Brookside. Burke, who will be attending The Harris Institute in the Fall of 2009, has aspirations of owning his own record label. In his application he writes "I understand now that you only get out what you put in and that it's not only skills that you get you places and makes people attracted to you, but it is also your attitude and how you present yourself".
Another oustanding application came from Rachel Windsor, who wrote:
"This message is for those who give,
Who show concern for how they live.
For those compassionate and kind
Who never leave a soul behind.
For those still trying when things get tough
Who know their best is good enough,
But who still always try to be
To the best of their ability."
